Offerings for Fall 2010:

1:30 p.m. Bible Study: I & II Timothy; led by Rev. Frey

Rev. Frey will lead the Wednesday afternoon Bible Study beginning September 8 at 1:30 p.m. in the Community Room.  This Fall, we will study the three New Testament books called, “The Pastoral Letters”: First & Second Timothy & Titus.  These letters of instruction on Christian living will also be the themes for the Sunday morning sermons.  We will use the “N.T. Wright ‘For Everyone’ Bible Study Guide” for the class.  The book costs $5.00.

5:00 p.m. Book Study: “The Heart of Christianity” by Marcus Borg; led by Barry Lamkin

What does it mean to define oneself as a “Christian?” Does being a Christian require assent to a particular set of beliefs or doctrines? Is it a way of living characterized by certain behaviors? Is it doing certain things in this life as a reward for some future life or reward after death? Does being a Christian require a particular way of reading or understanding the Bible? And exactly how do we characterize God – is God a being “up there” somewhere, or is God among us, infused throughout creation yet distinct from creation?  The book costs $12.00.

7:00 p.m. Judaism 101 – Alphabet From Aleph to Tav; led by Jeff Buchman

If you have ever been curious about the language of the Hebrew Bible and the source of many Christian prayers, then we have a course for you.  From the absolute beginner to the curious scholar, we will learn to recognize the Hebrew alphabet and basic words in common Jewish blessings along with the translations.  We will learn the letters of the alphabet, vowels, styles of writing, ancient Hebrew script, transliteration, and numerical values in an informal classroom-style discussion format.  Led by last year’s “Spanish teacher”, Jeff  Buchman.

7:00 p.m. “Prayer Beyond Words”; led by Tom Kerns

“Come and find the quiet center in the crowded life we lead”, so go the words to one of our beautiful hymns.  In the “Sermon on the Mount” Jesus says something similar: “Whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret…” Matthew 6:62.  This class on Centering Prayer will meet for eight Wednesdays in the “Upper Room #202”.  For more information, contact Tom Kerns.  No materials needed.

7:00 p.m. “Parenthood”, a 5-week Bill Hybels sermon series; led by Linda Corman

Parenthood.  Nothing gives us more joy – or greater challenges.  “Parenthood” helps you tackle the thorny issues parents face today to develop confidence and competence in your role as a parent.  ONLY offered Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27, and Nov. 3.

7:00 p.m. “Living the Questions 2.0”; led by Chuck Ausherman (also offered Sundays at 9:45 a.m.)

People know that at its core, Christianity has something good to offer the human race.  At the same time, many have a sense that they are alone in being a “thinking” Christian and that “salvaging” Christianity is a hopeless task.  What is needed is a safe environment where people have permission to ask the questions they’ve always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic.
Living the Questions is a 21-week DVD and web-based small group study exploring beyond the traditions and rote theologies in    which so many people and local churches seem to be stuck.  Ideal for Christian invitation, initiation and spiritual formation, Living the Questions will help seekers and “church alumni/ae” alike in discovering the significance of Christianity in the 21st Century and what a meaningful faith can look like in today’s world.
The format of each session includes a 20-minute video, followed by a general discussion of the topic.  The 20-minute videos for each session include conversation, sermon clips, lecture and excerpts.  The emphasis is on faith as a journey, not a destination.
