The Fifth Sunday
in Lent
March 9, 2008
WELCOME AND WORDS
OF COMMUNITY INTEREST
Welcome to The
Bath Church on this fifth Sunday in Lent. We especially welcome those
who are guests with us today. We look forward to giving you a "Welcome
Bag" as you leave the sanctuary so that you can become better acquainted
with us. Thank you for coming to worship, and we hope that you will join
us each Sunday.
PRELUDE: Brass
Choir
- As the Prelude
begins, let us with silence prepare our hearts for worship -
p CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader:
Because you gave the breath of life,
All: We
give our thanks to you, O Lord, with every breath
Leader:
Because you nurtured life with human love,
All: We
bring you all of our relationships for your blessing.
Leader:
Because you gave the rich and living earth,
All: We
offer you, our Maker, the first fruits of our fields.
Leader:
Because you gifted us with time to be,
All: We
bring our moments and our days as gifts again to you.
Leader:
Because you gave us skills to work and create:
All: We
bring you what we make with our hands and the money we earn with our
skills.
Leader:
Because each one of us has gifts and skills, some recognized, some
talents hidden,
All: We
offer you what each of us can see, and make and do. Enable us to see
more clearly what these gifts may be.
Leader:
Because you freely offered us redeeming love,
All: We
bring the gift of love in gratitude to you.
All: From
gift to gift, from grace to grace, our gifts are only gifts of yours
returned. We offer you, O God, our praise.
p HYMN OF PRAISE: God of Creation,
All-Powerful No. 27
p
COMMUNITY PRAYER:
Gracious God,
we are so often content to sink into the background when you have called
us to be bold in the faith. We are so often willing to accept
mediocrity, so often hesitant to risk. Even though we are quick to say
that you will keep us safe from harm, we cling to the trappings of this
world as if they and not you, were our God. Forgive our fear. Strengthen
our resolve. Forgive our apathy. Forgive our fear. Strengthen our
resolve. Kindle within us the fire of your Holy Spirit; in Jesus’ name
we pray. Amen.
In silence
we bring our prayers of confession….
p SILENT PRAYER • WORDS OF ASSURANCE •
PASSING GOD’S PEACE: "May the peace of Christ be with you."
p RESPONSE: Ubi Caritas et Amor
No. 399
Ubi caritas
et amor, ubi caritas Deus ibi est.
Where true
charity and love abide, God is dwelling there; God is dwelling there.

MICAH
MOVIE: (new day and time) Sunday, March 16 (Palm
Sunday!) at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room
"The
Narrow Path………….." Following in the footsteps of the great apostles
of nonviolence – Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy
Day, Thomas Merton and Oscar Romero – John Dear, SJ presents in The
Narrow Path the challenging message of Jesus in a fresh way,
speaking with new force and vision of God’s plea for peace. Fr. John
Dear’s interpretation of the life and death of Jesus calls for the
body of Christ, the Church, to follow in the way of Jesus to the
very end, without compromise, no matter the cost. The Narrow Path is
a bold and challenging film, a prophetic call to embody the
nonviolence of Jesus and become instruments of peace. Not only does
this film address the biblical teachings in the Sermon on the Mount,
but John Dear spends a good deal of time focusing on the lifestyle
of nonviolence (internal and external) as a priority before God and
the example of his son, Jesus. See the movie preview at
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2016876871.
