PRELUDE: When I Survey the Wondrous Cross
David Hegarty
WORDS OF WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS
+ CALL TO WORSHIP:
Leader: We gather in the presence of our God, who
sets before us the ways of life and death.
People: We gather in the presence of Jesus
Christ, who calls us to accept the cost of discipleship that we may
know its joy.
Leader: We gather in the presence of the Spirit,
who sustains us in both trial and rejoicing.
All: In our living and our dying, we are yours,
God. In the shadow of your wings, we sing for joy in the Name of Our
Triune God.
+ GATHERING HYMN:
Beneath the Cross of Jesus No. 255
+ UNISON PRAYER:
God of all mercy, we confess how hard it is, despite all
of our pious claims, for us to feel deeply the death of one person so
many centuries ago, or to grasp fully the meaning this death has for us
now and for eternity. Forgive our sins, O God, and touch our thoughts,
our feelings, and our souls with the great drama of Jesus’ crucifixion.
Help us to see and to remember always that whatever righteousness we
have, it is because of this one’s sacrificial death on the cross and
victory over the powers of sin and death. In the name of Jesus and the
confidence of the cross we pray. Amen.
(Silent prayers)
